"Future" Hopes to Evoke Change
Blink-182, REM, Black Eyed Peas contribute to political CD.

by Krista Desens

LOS ANGELES, CA  [Friday Jul.2.2004]  /RedBoxCode.com/ -- On August 10, indie-label Barsuk Records releases "Future Soundtrack for America." The compilation CD features contributions from Blink-182, REM and Fountains of Wayne. The project was organized by John Flansburgh of They Might Be Giants, and the album will raise funds for MoveOn.org, Common Assets and similar political advocacy groups.

David Byrne, Death Cab for Cutie, The Black Eyed Peas' Will.i.am, They Might Be Giants, Bright Eyes and the late Elliot Smith have all contributed previously unreleased tracks for "Future." Tom Waits will offer "Day After Tomorrow" from his forthcoming album, "Real Gone," due this October.

Flansburgh told Billboard, "As a citizen, I felt like we're living in an extreme time and I feel I'm very nervous and unhappy with the state of the world and I wanted to do something other than just shake my fist at the TV." He added, "This is a very different moment than a lot of others...where moderate people, people with sensible, measured political opinions are more than a little outraged by what's happening. Everyone has to remember the events of the last election. Things have not gotten better since then; they've gotten worse. There's no reason that we cannot affect a basic change."

The compilation's full track listing is currently being finalized. However, They Might Be Giants covers "Tippecanoe and Tyler Too" -- William Henry Harrison's 1840 campaign song.
